Demographics: *
White 89.5%
Black 0.7%
Hispanic 9.8%
Asian 4.0%
Other 3.2%
Median income *$86,175.

Friedman is probably "too liberal" for most people here, but still the article makes sense.

Oleg i have 2 things to say.
1 ( off topic )
The numbers is the only thing that does not lie. People use convenient numbers to substantiate their opinions, find anecdotal examples, change facts, obscure the truth, but numbers ( collected properly ) will always tell the truth.
2) ( on topic).
( for the purpose of this discussion we will omit the volatility of the last 12 months, where Russia went from being best performing to the the worst performing market in the world and back to the best performing)
Russian economy has been growing leaps and bounds.. 8% y/y growth ever since the default in 1998, where it hit the absolute bottom. Every single indicator you can find has been expanding at the rate second to only china. Real income per capita, GDP, shrinking unemployment, etc.
Of course most of it was achieved by selling commodities.

selling commodities on the short term has been a great driver of growth, however on the long term it's not sustainable. Russia is way too big to lock itself into just one industry.
Strategically the next steps should be the Dubai path.. parley into other industries. They have the infrastructure, population, low taxes, liquidity and ALMOST everything that's needed to take this next step.
The key they are missing is a sophisticated legal system, personal and business protection FROM the government.
If they can overcome this, they can become a major player in almost every faucet of the world economy.

Igor, without any regard of Mr. Friedman's political views; Comparison to France & Italy holds water. Both countries had a long cultural and economic traditions, they had business enterprises that were ran (and still being ran) for centuries by the same families. Here, we're looking at the country that:
a) Had withdrawn itself from the world markets for 70 years.
b) Had lost 14 of its 15 economic zones (as small as some of them may be, they were interlocked)

Well, having spent 20 years in USSR and after studying Russian history throughout all my life, that "if" may cancel all the good things that you have listed.

Oleg, I agree.. but if they could do it in Dubai, they can do it in Russia.. it may just take time..

Mike, quoting my favorite movie (word by word) with my best Robert Duvall's impression:
"They might, Mike, they just might..."

Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Russian Interior Minister Rashid
Nurgaliyev said law enforcement officials and their families
will have to declare their incomes starting next year as the
Kremlin struggles to rein in corruption.
“Every day when I go to work I see what kinds of cars our
employees are driving. You can’t imagine!” Nurgaliyev said in
an interview broadcast on state television today. “Many of them
couldn’t be bought on the salaries our employees earn.”
President Dmitry Medvedev said in February that government
officials and their families would be required to provide more
detailed information about assets and income when they file
their taxes this year as part of a push to combat corruption. On
Sept. 15, he said Russia’s “main problem” is that “corrupt
officials run” the country, RIA Novosti reported.

The article is about the INTENT..
If the government wants to clamp down.. they will.. it may take time.. but they are correct steps.

Mike the INTENT is not to end the corruption, but to make it sound like there is INTENT. It's been done before, they filmed Militia Generals' dachas, golden toilets and stuff... In Russian it's called - бей своих, чтоб чужие боялись.
Nothing new. Someone placed a picture in "Russia" album ones - white Hammer with a sticker ""
