THE South Korean government has written to a number of Sydney mayors asking them to "dob in" Koreans involved in prostitution.
The move comes on the back of figures suggesting at least 1000 of its nationals are working in the local sex industry, many believed to be as a result of sex trafficking.
A letter sent by Jin Soo Kim, the Sydney Consul General for South Korea, has requested them to "advise us immediately" of "any information on Korean nationals" involved in illegal sex practices, "either as a victim or an offender". The letter says the consulate has a "police attache ready to support enforcement activities where needed".

One mayor who received the letter, Hornsby's Nick Berman, said: "It's not every day a foreign government writes to me about anything. So when I get a letter on something so disturbing, I take it very seriously."
It is understood South Korea is concerned about an alarming growth in Korean sex workers in Australia going unchecked.
A spokesman from its Sydney consulate said there were criminal "networks" in Korea linked to sex trafficking to Australia.
"There are operations I cannot talk about," he said, but stressed Sydney and Melbourne were the epicentres for alleged violations.
South Korea is understood to be pursuing reprisals against its nationals who willingly participate in the industry here, including a year in jail and compulsory return to Korea. More serious offences, including sex trafficking, can lead to 10 years in jail.
South Korea sent its special ambassador for overseas Koreans, Moon Hayong, to Canberra in December to meet senior foreign affairs officials and federal police. There have been reports of tensions between the two countries over the sex issue.

The owner of a Sydney brothel has been charged with human trafficking offences after the Salvation Army discovered three woman allegedly being held as sex slaves.
A 42-year-old Chinese-Cantonese man allegedly trafficked the young women from Thailand to work at his brothel in Guildford in Sydney's west.
The Australian Federal Police will allege the women were told they were travelling to Australia on student visas but upon arrival had their passports confiscated and were taken to the brothel where they were held against their will.
Advertisement: Story continues below It was "an abhorrent situation", said the AFP's national co-ordinator of human trafficking operations, Glyn Lewis.
"It's our general experience [that] these women live under very harsh conditions," Superintendent Lewis said.
"Their freedom's restricted, they may be forced in various ways coercively, threatened with deportation by the owners [and] lied to. They often have difficult language skills so they're really in a very frightened state when we get to meet them."
The Salvation Army, which operates a safe house for victims of human trafficking, received a tip-off that the women were being held against their will.
The women chose to speak to police and a federal police investigation allegedly discovered they had been illegally trafficked and detained in sexual servitude.
Five search warrants were executed last night at the brothel as well as residential and business addresses in Cabramatta, Casula and Canley Heights.
The brothel owner was granted bail and will face court later this month on several charges.
Superintendent Lewis said it was too early to say what would happen to the three women, who have been referred to the Australian Red Cross for a three-month intensive program to recover from their trauma.
They may be granted witness protection (trafficking) visas and be able to remain in the country.
"By its very nature, this crime type involves people who are often reluctant to come forward to authorities," he said.
"Human trafficking ... is a heinous crime that impacts not only the victims, but their families and communities."
The maximum potential penalty for the brothel owner is 25 years' imprisonment.

Украина в связи с аномальными погодными условиями в России на границе получает 450 миллионов кубометров газа в сутки вместо 510 миллионов кубометров, предусмотренных техническими соглашениями с РФ. Такое заявление сделал министр энергетики и угольной промышленности Украины Юрий Бойко.
"Учитывая аномальную погоду в Российской Федерации, до наших западных границ доходит меньше газа, чем это предусмотрено по нашим техническим соглашениям. Идет очень большой отбор газа внутри России. Например, у нас на сегодняшний день должно быть 510 миллионов кубометров газа, а у нас 450 миллионов кубометров газа", - сказал министр.
Кроме того, он отметил, что в связи с такими действиями российских коллег Украина увеличила отбор газа из своих поземных хранилищ.
При этом Бойко подчеркнул, что Украина отбирает российский газ в объеме, не больше предусмотренного техническим соглашением. "Существует техническое соглашение, которое является дополнением к нашему контракту, по которому мы работаем", - пояснил министр.
Бойко также подчеркнул, что Украина не продает газ из своих хранилищ. "Мы не продаем газ из хранилищ. Мы просто дополнительно выпускаем газ, чтобы обеспечить соответствующее давление", - заявил министр, отметив, что Украина "дала на Турцию 11 миллионов кубометров газа в сутки". "Таким образом, мы помогаем Европе", - сказал он.

Россия на несколько дней снизила поставки газа в Западную Европу, в объеме до 10%, но затем объемы поставляемого газа вернулись к показателям, предусмотренным контрактом.
