I'd preffer an honest, principled man (or woman) with traditional, conservative values of limited government, low taxation, free enterprise (without undue government intervention), stong national defense and traditional, strict interpretation of the Constitution. For such a person to be a republican is far likelier scenario than for him/her to be a democrat. There hasn't been one since Harry Truman.
