IMMIGRATION Minister Chris Bowen has bowed to pressure from two prominent international universities, which will now have the same rights and responsibilities as top-tier institutions under new visa rules for international students.
Under recommendations proposed by the Knight review of international student visas, University College London and Carnegie Mellon University, both of which have campuses in Adelaide, were disadvantaged in being able to attract overseas students.
UCL Australian campus chief executive David Travers and CMU's Adelaide-based executive director Terry Buss last week wrote to Mr Bowen to outline their concerns at the conditions, which would preclude their students from applying for post-study work visas of up to four years on graduation.
A spokeswoman confirmed the minister had clarified a change in their status under the Knight review with both institutions last Wednesday, after the HES highlighted their concerns.
