A filibuster-proof majority is 51 senators. At that moment Al Franken was not confirmed as a senator, so Democrats had only 50 votes. That is why votes from Spector (who is Republican) and others were important. NOW Democrats have a filibuster-proof majority.
So my prediction is that nothing will change. Republicans had an overwhelming majority in both the House and the Senate and ruined the country financially. And now there is no clear leader in the party. BTW, Star Ledger of NJ had endorsed an independent for a Governor, bypassing two political heavyweights - Jon Corzine & Chris Christie. I think it's a major shift in the right direction. Let's not forget that a next major of NYC will be elected as an independent.
