Russian Rail says it is planning to create a super-train that will travel from Moscow to Vladivostok in just 7 hours, going at a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour.
Russian Rail has set a date of 2030 to have the train in operation. But the project being discussed is likely to take many more years to be put into practice.
Currently the fastest train in the world is the one in Shanghai Station which reaches a speed of around 450 kilometers per hour. Russian Rail is thus looking to more than double the speed of the current fastest train in the world. The fastest train in Russia is the Sapsan traveling to St. Petersburg and over to Nizhniy Novgorod at a maximum speed of 200 to 250 kilometers per hour.
A thousand kilometers per hour is almost the speed of sound, or half the speed of a bullet leaving the barrel of an AK-47. To make a train move that fast, Russian Rail will need a whole new system of rails. The train will have to float on magnets, which will be similar to bullet trains in Japan.
If the trains do ever appear in Russia, doctors advise those with pacemakers against such high-speed travel.
