The explosion happened in the federal waters, so it is Obama's responsibility from day 1. He proved himself the most INCOMPETENT manager. well, not exactly. The law requires the president to ensure oil spill cleanup in the case of significant threat to public health. it is not the case so far. Again, it is lack of leadership. One can argue that there is political reasons for that. but lack of actions on his side has nothing to do with incompetence as a manager

I really think that the idea about the administration not interfering in this disaster because of it's own political motives is one of the most cynical things I've heard. Not to say that I'm happy with the way it's handled- it is a total chaos and a real tragedy, but to say they are happy about it is really .....almost paranoid. My husband, who is a chemical engineer and an expert in surface/solutions cleaning ( if anyone is interested, I can provide with his articles) is telling me that this issue is so enormously complex, we simply can not "wrap our mind" around it. ALL engineers are now thinking about the solutions, there are thousands of calls to the best ,most brilliant minds around the globe - so far there is no single workable answer to it.......

They ( all the best minds and engineers) had to be doing it from the very beginning. That's what a true leader would do. But Obama is incompetent in all areas of life except agitation and propaganda.

exempting from a detailed impact analysis, doesn't mean that there wasno impact analysis done at all, and it definitely doesn't mean theywere exempt from following regulations.

furthermore, "BP stated in their permit application that a spill was “unlikely,” andclaimed that if a spill did occur it would cause “no significantadverse impacts.” The company's optimistic scenario echoes that of theMMS itself, which conducted a study in 2007" (remind me again, who was in office then?) Может кто-нибудь меня опровергнет? Понятно, что правительство не обладает техникой и технологиями для запечатывания трубы на глубине и сбора нефти с поверхности. Такие технологии есть у нефтяных компаний. Опять же понятно, что компания, непричастная к катастрофе, сама влезать в проблему не будет. Имидевые риски. С запечатыванием трубы на глубине все сложнее, но там как раз можно было бы оставить BP. Но правительство могло бы нанять или проплатить лизинг техники для очистки нефтяного пятна у этих компаний, возглавить операцию по очистке. Снять имиджевый риск с компаний, правда, в этом случае этот риск лег бы на президента. Есть ли какие нибудь законодательные препоны у такого подхода? Может ли правительство заняться очисткой, наняв частные компании, а потом выставить счет BP? Или это невозможно без согласия BP, a правительство не имеет право отстранить BP от операции?

I don't understand - we've been promised a completely different, transparent, competent government..and what we got is more of the same + hypocrisy (taking contributions from big business, giving them green light to do things and then badmouthing them when things go wrong)..
BP is primarily responsible for cleaning up the spill, but there were lots of things that the government could have and should have done and didn't do.. but the reason the oil companies are forced to drill that deep is because of the stupid regulations which prohibits them from drilling closer to shore which is safer.. the reactionary decision to stop drilling offshore will only result in drilling more in other parts of the world which will result in more spills and is much less environmentally safe than here.. also not allowing drilling on land (ie ANWAR) makes them drilling offshore and deep..
