BTW, the guy was told one course of Chemotherapy was $140K, minimum 3 courses needed – and no guarantee, of good outcome even after four courses, because the severe health conditions. Thus, each person who do not pay, costs paying patients $500-600K. The guy refused to take CHT and died. His widow decided to keep $40K out of 66, so somebody else would compensate for it …

I’m not sure that 70% is all waste. When my Russian acquaintance scrambled for his life (“socialized medicine” neglected his cancer until it reached the 4-th deadly degree and he rushed to this country – where the market approach allows proper quality). As a foreigner, he had to pay full price – so I could see the structure.

He was charged about $66K (analyses, surgeon’s appointments and surgery). Actually, they decided not to cut the tumor (too late), but to contain metastases , hoping for future Chemotherapy. For the appointments, visits and surgery, the world class surgeon from a leading cancer institute was paid 6K, 60K was supposed to go to the hospital.

Actually, Medicare in general is one of the best payers for the doctor, if you look at the amount of money paid to the doctor per procedure. Very rarely any isnurance company will pay more then Medicare. Agree with the Medicaid part, they pay very little.

Hospital is considered a health care provider as well as the doctor. Money spent on managing the process between the insurance premium collection (in case of the private sector) or budget allocation (in case of the goverment) and what is spent in the form of a payment to a healthcare provider, is what I call waste.

Dima, I think that the waste portion is the only thing you will get no argument on around here. We waiste money like there is no tomorrow.
