The only other American president who bowed slightly once was Nixon. Otherwise, it's established that American presidents do not bow to monarchs. And the heads of states of other countries do not bow to the Emperor of Japan. Obama's bow made the Emperor and his wife feel really embarrassed. Japanese media did not even want to publish the pictures to spare the embarrassment.
Somebody in Obama's protocol group does not do a good job in instructing the POTUS.

Lina, Bush is lowering his head, because the king is giving him a medal. You are the one with an eye problem.

What difference does it make why he bowed? It's not like he's significantly taller than the king and the king otherwise wouldn't have been able to reach overhis head...
And even disregarding that incident, Bush also bowed to the Pope, gave a back rub to the German Chancellor, winked at the Queen of England, and kissed the Saudi king. You're right, bowing as a gesture of respect is so much more inappropriate.

Lina, can you ever discuss Obama as Obama without mentioning Bush ? Did any one on my side of the stadium have ever mentioned Clinton when Bush was criticized? You must have seen the same group of photos where each world leader stands upright, while our President is bowing deeply? Can you defend his behavior without mentioning Bush?

Lena G 17.11.2009 11:01

We just do not get it!!!
He is the light in the darkness!
He knows everything about everything and sets new standards for everything... He is the leader of men! Trust him.
Just ... one day later when you wake up... and feel bitter... if ever...
Cheers...(D)

Wagner 17.11.2009 11:50

I see it as a sign of respect - I don't have a problem with it.

Lina, could Obama do anything at all that you would have a problem with?

If it turned out that Obama eats kittens for dinner, Lina would be like: "That's a sign of his cultural diversity - I don't have a problem with it. " :-D

Lena G 17.11.2009 12:01

Pavel, Ya yzhe davno zametila, chto Vi ne ochen' vnimatel'no chitaete... kogda Ya sravnivala povedenie Obami k Bushy, eto bilo v otvet na posti kotorie imenno sravnivaut ego s drygimi. Everything is relative.
maria rios:The only other American president who bowed slightly once was Nixon. Otherwise, it's established that American presidents do not bow to monarchs. And the heads of states of other countries do not bow to the Emperor of Japan.

If You’re Going to Bow, You Might as Well Wear a Bow
Posted by Frank J. ( from IMAO blog:-D )

What is it with Obama and bowing? Even Japan was like, “Who’s this loser?” Obama’s new nickname should be “Lil’ Bow Wow” for how he wows us with all his bowing.
When you go overseas, Mr. President, you represent the United Statesof America — the most powerful country on earth and in most of thesolar system. You bow to no one; they bow to you! The proper greetingfor a foreign leaders is to punch him right in his stupid, foreign facebecause what in the world is he going to do about it? Nothing, becauseyou lead the USA. Why bow to anyone you can freely punch in the face?
If you want to bow to someone, though, Obama, try bowing t o theAmerican people. You may delight us with your obsequiousness and weshall consider sparing you.

You bow to no one; they bow to you!
----------------------------------------------------
And this is precisely why he is bowing and doing everything he can to improve our image in the world. GW’s arrogant and superior attitude has managed to alienate the U.S. from the rest of the world, a little bowing is the least we can do to counteract or neutralize this damaging legacy and hopefully restore and build new diplomatic relationships. It takes a trullystrong and confident man to bow to a man half his size.

Wagner 18.11.2009 02:08

It takes a trullystrong and confident man to bow to a man half his size.

By this logic, just how strong and confident does the man need to be to bend over backwards? ;-)

All kidding aside, Lina, you've been asked this many times, but i am still wondering can you possibly objectively name anything of Obama's at all that you disagree with?

A raft of reports of questionable or downright faulty jobs numbers -- including many uncovered by ABC News that showdozens of jobs created and millions of dollars spent in congressional districts that don't exist-- has cast a harsh spotlight on the jobs claims connected to the $787 billion stimulus package.

Wagner 02.12.2009 13:14

Obama just announced that we will send 30,000 more troops to Afganistan but will pull out the troops from Iraq starting this summer to be completely out in 18 months. What do you think about this?

Khramaya 02.12.2009 13:17

I am just concerned that Afghanistan is such a tribal country, you arenot fighting an army...Hope they had some talks with India last weekabout some of it, India supports Afghanistan - laterally, traditionally.

Tatiana S 02.12.2009 15:26

I don't see anything wrong with the bowing - it's just a sign of respect. High time for the US to stop looking like a bully but show some respect to other cultures as well, which is exactly what he is doing. "Laskovij bichok soset matku dvazhdi", slihali?

I think Obama is a very diplomatic and wise leader. It doesn't hurt to bend your back sometimes..So I strongly disagree with the position of those that think it is a sign of weakness. No, it's a sign of strengh - the ability to show respect even to those who you think don't deserve it..But then the question is - Japanese don't deserve for someone to follow thier customs? Ah?? I don't think so...a very respectful country.

Mihail 02.12.2009 15:37

the bowing is not a sign of respect or disrespect. It is sign of unprofessionalism for the president de-briefing team. They should explain to the president what behavior is appropriate. In diplomatic languagethe bowing is disrespectful to your own country. But I do not think it is big deal, everybody understands the president does not have experience yet.

Very nice, very nice
Other cultures do not reason like idealistic 16-year old maidens.
Especially Saudi Arabia ( BTW, what to respect them for?) To them Obama's bowing is not a sign of respect, but a sign of his subservience.
And to the Japanese, Obama's bow is a sign of nincompoopness.

Wagner 02.12.2009 23:31

I agreee with Misha, essentially it is a sign of bad protocol and ignorance on the side of Obama's team... What I do not agree with, that it is completely excusable...when one becomes a president the country doesn't expect him to learn on the job, they expect him to be competent from day 1. At least, I know, I do

Wagner 02.12.2009 23:34

As per the Afganistan troops move, I am concerned about putting more troops into that country. As much as I would like to see changes there, I am afraid, this is an unwinnable war, as all afganistan wars in the last hundreds of years have been. I thin more efforts need to be make on changing the country from within, economaically speaking. For example, there was an initiative to replace the opium fields with other crops. They experimented with saffron, which did really well, and the farmers were happy. however, they didn't establish a way to package, ship and sell the stuff so ultimately it turned out to be a bust...

strange...what kind of Commander-in-Chief announces troop surge and exit at the same time??
I miss grown-ups in the White House that don't play politics with national security...:-(

But I do not think it is big deal, everybody understands the president does not have experience yet.

Completely and utterly disagree!!! (md)The presidency is NOT a path to self discovery or some rite of passage. It is a JOB, the most important one. You cannot come in to work this morning and say that you know nothing about this and that because you just came in. You are expected to know what the hell you're doing by default of entering the building. Not to mention the army of tsars and advisors and cabinets and all other staff that this guy has.

What if you need surgery? And the doctor says, "Let's see. Where's the knife thingie? I'm gonna give it a whirl. See what happens, my first time and all"

I think what everybody understands is that he is bowing because he doesn't think US is a great country, but an arrogant one...that's the reason he is reducing himself to bowing..

Mike 03.12.2009 02:17

on somewhat unrelated subject, i thought it would be interesting.
i am working with a professional admission consultant and we were working on interviewing skills. One of the videos they showed on how NOT to do interviews was Sarah Palin Couric interview.
And one of the examples of how to handle tough questions was Obama.
It was interesting to understand the science behind why Palin interview left such a bad aftertaste, even though aside from 1-2 questions it seemed ok if you just look at the transcript, and how Obama even avoiding the tough questions seemed a lot more genuine.
I guess his advisers did a much better jobs or he's a better actor.

TATYANA 03.12.2009 03:12
