Перевели. Само выражение прекрасно преводится как "to pull something out of thin air" . Про сюжет это уже частный случай. Хотя я ничего не вижу неподходящего в " the plot of the last installment of Vampires of the Hobbit's Resident Evil was pulled out of thin air".
