Dmitry: there is still at least 70% waste in both the government and commercial sectors. Can we do better?
I’m not sure that 70% is all waste. When my Russian acquaintance scrambled for his life (“socialized medicine” neglected his cancer until it reached the 4-th deadly degree and he rushed to this country – where the market approach allows proper quality). As a foreigner, he had to pay full price – so I could see the structure.
He was charged about $66K (analyses, surgeon’s appointments and surgery). Actually, they decided not to cut the tumor (too late), but to contain metastases , hoping for future Chemotherapy. For the appointments, visits and surgery, the world class surgeon from a leading cancer institute was paid 6K, 60K was supposed to go to the hospital.
