In August of1985,the Saudis tired of this role. They linked their oil price tothespot market for crude and by early 1986 increased production from 2MMBPDto 5 MMBPD. Crude oil prices plummeted below $10 per barrel bymid-1986. Despite the fall in prices Saudi revenue remained about thesame with higher volumes compensating for lower prices.

interesting site about the whole crude oil history...you got me thinking and researching if it did had a real effect on prices than...btw, even in 2008 it eventually did an effect on price (it was cut in half eventually), it's just the goal of increased production in 2008 was different than it was in 1985 - in 2008 all they wanted is to sell as much as possible at the highest prices ever, in 1985 it was more political....

I too thought the award was a bit premature... until I read Alfred Nobel's original intent, as it is clearly spelled out in his will: ...to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. …one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.

Poor people have existed since the beginning of civilization and will always exist no matter what you do. Even in USSR some people lived in poverty. However, if you start going down the path of wealth redistribution, you stifle the initiative, the creative process that drives the progress and economy and end up with lines for milk at 5am. It just surprises the hell out of me that people who lived through the socialist regime at its "best" can still believe that you can somehow equalize incomes by taking money away from some and giving to others, who did not work hard for that money and do not deserve it. WAKE UP people!

Nothing against renewable energy industry per se, more against promoting it as an opportunity to tax regular people and businesses (Cap&Trade) which can costs jobs and hurt growing economy...if someone wants to promote investments in such industries provide tax-credits for those who want to invest...quite different from taxing those who grow economy, businesses and provide jobs...
