День 19 ноября был провозглашен «Всемирным днем туалета» в 2001 году в ходе международной конференции в Сингапуре, посвященной проблемам туалетов.
Более 200 делегатов из Азии, Европы и Северной Америки, представлявших 17 национальных туалетных ассоциаций, встретились, чтобы обсудить насущные проблемы и рассмотреть новые концепции развития туалетного дела. Результатом встречи стала Всемирная туалетная организация (ВТО), которая и явилась инициатором создания праздника.

17 декабря 1996 года Генеральная Ассамблея провозгласила 21 ноября «Всемирным днем телевидения» в ознаменование даты проведения первого Всемирного телевизионного форума в Организации Объединенных Наций. Государствам было предложено отмечать этот день, обмениваясь телевизионными программами, посвященными таким проблемам, как мир, безопасность, экономическое и социальное развитие и расширение культурного обмена.
«Всемирный день приветствий» отмечается ежегодно с 1973 года. Его придумали два брата-американца (Майкл и Брайен Маккомак) в самый разгар холодной войны, в знак протеста против усиления международной напряженности.
Эта идея была поддержана и руководителями государств, и простыми людьми. С тех пор каждый год 21 ноября отмечается «Всемирный день приветствий», радостных эмоций и хорошего настроения
