По рекомендации Экономического и Социального Совета (решение 2000/288 от 28 июля 2000 года) Генеральная Ассамблея провозгласила 18 декабря «Международным днем иммигранта».

В этот день в 1990 году была принята Международная конвенция о защите прав всех трудящихся-иммигрантов и членов их семей.
Согласно оценкам, каждый тридцать пятый житель планеты является иммигрантом, живущим и работающим за пределами своей страны. Иммигранты имеются среди населения всех стран

Православные христиане отмечают праздник в честь святителя Николая, архиепископа Мир Ликийских, чудотворца - одного из самых почитаемых на Руси и во всем православном мире святых.
Святитель Николай жил в III-IV веках и прославился как великий угодник Божий, поэтому в народе его обычно называют Николаем Угодником. Христиане верят, что и по сей день он совершает множество чудес в помощь молящимся ему людям. Кроме того, святой Николай считается покровителем всех странствующих.

19 декабря мировое сообщество отмечает «Международный день помощи бедным».
Организация объединенных наций рассматривает бедность как «состояние длительного вынужденного отсутствия необходимых ресурсов для обеспечения удовлетворительного образа жизни». Она означает не только недостаток денег, но и достойной работы, удобного жилья, доступа к хорошему образованию и здравоохранению.
