How will we differentiate them from illegals (who came illegally and get their SSN later)? and why did we need to cover "temporary workers"? You do realize that even if they do pay taxes, their portion of the coverage will still be subsidized a lot since their income is probably low?...

Page 170 is part of the section which says that people who do not have coverage should pay 2.5 %. This does not apply to NONRESIDENT ALLIENS, INDIVIDUALS RESIDING OUTSIDE UNITED STATES,INDIVIDUALS RESIDING IN POSSESSIONS OF THE UNITED STATES.

Page 170 does not say that these people will be provided with public option. It exempts them from paying 2.5%.

I think the catch is that the bill does NOT prohibit those without "papers" to get coverage (you only need SSN to qualify)...
But illegals are truly free in this country - they are the only ones in the country are are EXEMPT from paying for public option if they don't want it...(tr)

Svetlana, government did not create this monopoly.. it's a fact that we allow local governments to create all kinds of stupid local laws too "amend" the federal regulations. But that's more of a constitutional issue, i think..
Again, there is no harm in public insurance company, as long as it's not subsidized.

I know it's the locasl/state government created monopoly...all I was saying is when (any) government interferes it doesn't end well...
Actually I had a heated discussion with my husband last night about it (md) :-D He was defending Charlie Crist for throwing some insurance co.s out of Florida for wanting to sell only car insurance policies and not home insurance (some co.s went bankrupt in Fl after some harsh hurraicne seasons)...I think there is nothing wrong if some want to provide car insurance only, others will provide home insurance - market will take care of it..
The reason he governor is doing it is they think that insurance co. should not cherry pick policies with the best "profits" and should sell all kinds of policies if they want to do business in Fl...
What do you think? Should the government tell private business (in this case unsurance co.s) what to offer to their customers??

Sveta, i don't know if public plan is supposed to be subsidized in the current version.. but if they do go forward with it i hope they write it as a law!
About government telling companies who to insure.. it's a tough one.. we are facing the same issues with health insurance.. you can't get a policy if you are on your own and have pre-existing conditions..
Being in a hurricane zone is like having a pre-existing condition..
But when you are a consumer u need insurance, in fact your mortgage company forces you to have one ( and rightfully so ), and if you can't get one.. maybe it is government job to step in in some capacity.

What do you call "subsidized"? If they tax one group of people to offer coverage to another one - is it subsidized? If everyone, regardless if they are sick or healthy, will pay the same premium (based on their income)? Is it not subsidized by taxpayers with higher income?
Ok, I will play the devil's advocate :-) The mortgage co. wants me to have home ins., BUT if I can't get it on my own-they offer it to me (for more money, of course).
But 1. isn't it my choice to live in a hurricaine-prone zone, and I should pay for it if I want coverage? 2. Maybe people need a very high deducatible home coverage (let's say 10-20K-for smth really serious) and it will make their yearly premiums lower??
