Julia, I am not against paying local taxes, and I do understand what they are used for.. I am against government (local or federal) looking at me like I am a milking cow and completely disregard my privacy..
two more similarities I thought of with Hitler (ch) - both wrote a book before getting elected, both tried to build bridges with the muslim world..

I would actually like to have a discussion on what taxes are Ok and what are not in people's opinion?
In my opinion, the worst and the most unfair tax is the property tax. Just think about it: you bought a house, you paid mortgage for 30 years, worked hard and finally you are done with the payments. But you don't own the house. You have to pay your state government thousands of dollars every year to live there, until you die.
And when you die, the greedy government comes and takes away half of what you saved for you children or grandchildren.
That's the second most unfair tax.

how about if you have invested into a more expensive house than your neighbor who bought the house thousands of years ago, but still use the same roads, schools, fire department, etc.. why do you have to pay significantly more for the same services?? how fair is it??

and this is what estate planning is for.
Nobody takes away anything under 1,2 mil ( or whatever it is now) . Over it - get a trust.
And how do you envision your sewer, road, traffic light, library, local park, town ambulance is supposed to be maintained after you are done with mortgage payments? The only thing I'm complaining - my school tax is quite high. But, hey, my kids went to public school, did great and I want other kids in town to get just as good of education.

And your neighbors property is reassessed regularly and is ( at least in NY state) is taxed at TODAY's value.
