yes, Masha, how about you and your husband both quit their jobs and will be spending lots of time with the kids...what's the point of working so hard and thinking about your kids future, their education, your own retirement??..obviously half of what your make ain't enough for our government now..just kick back and wait for the public option to go through..
speaking of public option, WHY would progressive be unhappy with not getting it??..Medicaid will be expanded, all low income families will be covered and receive subsidies, everyone will be required to have coverage..unless they really want to destroy the private insurance industry, I honestly don't get why they are upset..*-)

MDs can work as much or as little as they like it's a choice they make just like the rest of us mortals..

this was NOT the point..(ch) doctors especially surgeons have limited period of time during which they can practice..right??..people work hard and extra hours to take care of the families and the future, not pay extra taxes for Obama's utopia..

but she will be making a lot more than the average professional by then... and its not as if surgeons dont get paid during their residency... and she probably wont get forced into early retirement (like many other professionals), unless she can't do her job... and even then she can possibly still practice or teach. I'm just trying to understand Svetlana's point. When should I start getting my violin out or start up a collection for the poor surgeons?

Well.. she went thru 4 years of school, 4 years of med school, 5 years of residency where she works 80 hours on a good week for below minimal wage, 2 years of fellowship at the same minimal wage to end up with 150k loans and decent salary.
Whatever she will be making - will not be enough to compensate for this.. luckily she never was into it for money.

she works long hours, but its not for minimal wage. I realize that if you devide her salary by her hours it may seem like it, but many professionals work 60+ hours/week without receiving overtime pay, and without the prospects of making a very good living in the future.

Мike, it's impossible to explain when talking to a marxist (ch) so, don't waste yourself..everyone should be compensated the same to them, not based on choices people make..
but regardless, docs start (making actual income) late in life, not everyone can continue for a long time to work such crazy hours, be on-call, and their physical health has to be top notch..
funny, we have a neuro-surgeon, huge, overweight man in his 50s, his kids are my older daughter's age..very often he falls asleep in front of the chart at the nursing station..everyone knows that he does it, no one gets surprise anymore..(ch)
the best specialty is dermatology..no taking calls..(ch)

Svetlana, my wife did not go into this for the money, but of course people should be adequately compensated for the work the put in and the talent they have.
This is the way the market works, and nobody can change that.. No matter how much people try to bend those supply/demand curves top people in their professions will always be well compensated and the bottom will be unemployed.

She must not be doing her residency in the city, because the average salary seems to be in the 50's...
Ive worked 60 hour weeks for 35,000, and there was no guarantee that I would be making hundreds of thousands in the future, no prestige, and no job security... she's paying her dues, and I for one think its worth it - obviously she does too.
