i think #1 think we need to reform is the expectation that everyone should go to college.
i think that notion is just CRAZY.. and it hurts both kids who would really benefit from college and those who would not.

Yes, Mike, you are right. Honorable Mike Bloomberg ended up all prof education programs in NYC. And said: Everyone goes to college! And attacted the Union after that. What happened? did city students got any better? No! Before they could apply to a vocational high school and had skills to go and work after graduation. Now they do not.
Sveta, BTW, teacher becomes tenure on the 4 year of his work with satisfactory rating for all this years. So the administration has 4 years to take a "closer look" on who is comming. Do they? And practicaly the Union is powerless all this time "to make a teacher to stay". Again, you are all listening to media compain against the Unions. It is very popular now!

Galina, I have nothing against the teachers..I appreciate the ones with a calling..for the last two years my daughter has had two excellent teachers who do an excellent job, and it's a public school, not private..however, somehow the private school education has been more superior than public without any federal standards and so on, and the cost of each is pretty comparable..so, there is a way to do a better job without further complicating the issue..

today every private school provides free education for very talented people who can't afford it...
it's called scholarship...

What is it all about? Do we need an educational reform in the USA? Yes, we do. Even more then a health care reform!
But by the laws of this Federation the education is the matter of the local government. It will be very hard to change anything in one step or with one piece of legislature.
