How is that possible that states that are considered to be Republican strongholds have counties with most people on food stamps?

I was surprised to learn that Detroit has less percentage of people on food stamps compared to counties in Alaska or Texas...
higher percentage doesn't mean more people or more aid...in some red states it would be thousands, in large blue states it's tens millions...each red or blue states have red and blue counties within the state too..amountwise and populationwise I am sure blue states are still head, NYT is just spinning it to pass their message...
Information is information, regardless where it is printed. It is how you spin it matters -- and this is where NYT differes from WSJ, etc. The map over there is not interpretation, IMHO. It is govt data.
Svetlana, that could indeed be correct (say, comparing LA to pretty much anywhere in Alaska). And one can see the raw numbers by simple multiplication. But I think even with that map one can compare similar places like southern Texas and mid Michigan...
what do you think is the purpose of the that article?
btw, looked up some stats about LA vs Hidalgo county, Tx...Tx beats LA, hands down- lower unemployment (lower than national avarage 9% vs 12% in LA), cost of living, public schools student per teacher ration ratio, etc...the population in that particular county is almost 90% Hipsanics (so I doubt they vote republican :-)...so if you point was that oil businessmen in Tx are food stamp recepients, it's very unlikely..:-)
Alexey, you really can't compare 5000 people counties to 2mln people county
It's totally expect tiny counties to be outliers.. but you already knew that...

Mike, I already commented on that below (9:33). Once again, compare Alaska and mid-Michigan.
Svetlana, I highly doubt that oil businessperson will receive food stamps. At least I hope so. But there are plenty of people who do. Do ou know for sure that they are all Democrat-voting Hispanics? Where do you get your data from?
As for the purpose of the article... hm... let me guess...
BTW, if a true businessmen is always looking for an advantage, wouldn't receiving free govt help provide that advantage? Does it matter who will be providing money, govt or customers? :-)
